Clutch Replacement Question

Good morning all.

I have a 94 XLT 2.3L and the clutch is starting to slip a little in 5th gear on the highway. Also it is slightly "notchy" shifting into first or reverse from a dead stop. If I'm rolling (even just a little) then it goes into gear easily.
Picked up a new clutch kit and will be installing it probably this weekend.

My question is does the slave cylinder have to be disconnected? I would like to take the transmission loose and move it back enough to get to the clutch assembly without having to open up the hydralic line. There are too many nightmare stories about clutch bleeding on the forums for my liking.

Thanks!

Maybe I was just lucky, but I had to replace the 5sp in my 88' and I never had to bleed the clutch. I don't think you have enough slack in the line to do the clutch. In my case I just moved the slave cyl into the new trans and I reconnected the clutch line. The fittings are sealed so when you remove them you will hear this "phssssst" sound. Do yourself a favor and get the clutch line removal tool for $5 at the parts store. It is a pain to use, but so is trying to use a screwdriver.

Now if you replace the slave cyl while you are in there, then you have no choice but to bleed the system. Another tip I would offer, is that if you want to avoid messing with the exhaust, you can unbolt the trans crossmember from the frame to give you lots of room. It could be different on your year, but it worked fine for me.
