I was wondering what everyone thinks about engine rebuild kits from places such as summit or jegs? I am needing to rebuild the 302 in my 91 4x4, planning on strokin to a 347. The truck wont see any race duty, just some towing in the 3 ton range and perhaps a little bit of mud once in a while. (cant own a 4x4 and keep it clean right?) But are the parts contained in them worth it? or are there some certain ones that are recommended? I saw they all use cast cranks and most have hypeuratic(sp?) pistons.
Also does anyone have a recommended cam grind for a 347 in a truck? I will be using the stock heads..as long as they check out good at the machine shop. I doubt I will get them ported and polished. Just cleaned up a bit, and I will replace the valves and seals.
I use the Summit rebuild kits. The only problem has been if a part is out of stock, then it will take longer to ship. One time I got a defective camshaft (manufacturing defect), but it was replaced almost immediately. The kits are somewhat custom assembled so if you work with the sales person you can end up with some really nice parts.
