I went to start my truck this morning and as i turned the key all I heard was a loud crack. My lock cylinder goes all the way to the start position but it won't crank and it doesn't spring back. Also, the little button on the left side of the steering column that allows you to remove the key isn't needed anymore. The key turns back without it.
I was wondering if anyone knows about this problem so maybe I won't have to dig into the column clueless. Thanks.
This doesn't seem like the correct forum for this question but i feel a little more confident about advice from guys who know what a real motor is. 300 ci.

Reason: ps
You broke the ignition acutator. It is an aluminum piece that connects the key cylinder to the ignition switch. And if it is a tilt steering wheel replacing it is a pretty hairy job because you get to take the tilt assembly apart.
I had to do this on my 90 about 2 years ago. Not bad though. Had to pull the steering wheel and drop the column down a little to get to the actuator. Did not have to disassemble the tilt mechanism though. I found instructions on doing mine by searching the forum for replacing ignition actuator. Just takes some time, patience, average skills and some tasty beverages. Probably a $150 to $200 shop fix if you go that route.
