what are popluar options to the supposedly high per. K & N? i've heard of Amasoil filters, others. (not Fram) I didn't notice a bit of diff. in this K & N i bought. I think a bunch of hype. Plus it didn't want to fit just right (E-0945), it was longer than the fram and i think there was some restrictions at the nose cone because it came much closer to the end of the plastic silencer assy. i.e. if it was about 1-2" shorter, it would be o.k. thanks for any advice. paul....'01 4.2
Your going to get about a 1000 different opinions about this. Basically the "high performance" filter allows more air flow than the stock paper filter. The risk with this is that there is a potential for for dirt to get thru as well. So do your research and decide for youself. By the way, I have an Airraid intake with Airraid reusable filter and have no problems. I've checked the inside of the intake tube an throttle body, clean as a whistle.
is this an drop in filter, and where do you get these at? I have no intentions of starting a K&N debate. i'm just asking about other avaialble air filter options. thanks....
The Airraid filter is part of the intake system. Its the same style as a K&N. Take a look at my gallery for a pic. I think airraid makes a drop in filter too, but not sure. Check www.airraid.com
There are lots of other brands: true flow, air hog, ect.
I read all of the k and N propoganda on the web site and even contacted them, which they gave me assurrances that thier filters provided superior filtration.
The reality is this: I take my truck off road nearly every week hauling my dirt bike to ride. Usaully 1/2 to 3 miles at the most. Removed the K and N to check its condition and found dust in the intake duct down stream of the K and N. The K and N is now yard sale or ebay fodder.
I also have a Cobra Mustang that never goes on dirt roads or trails. Intake track is dust free. Got rid of the K and N anyway. The engine is too expensive to take a risk for the neglible increase in performance.
If you never drive on dusty roads the K and N is probably OK. However I would never put one on a diesel, beacuse the diesel intake suction is over double that of a gas engine.
First of all, a filter will not stop hardly any dust/dirt.
The OIL stops the dust and dirt.
I race Go-Karts and I have run many types of air filters. If oiled properly a filter and oil will keep most everything out.
Also, if you put different types of air filters on the flow bench, they all flow the same except for the paper filters. The filters that have foam (K&N, etc) in them all flow exactly the same. The paper filters are horrible; especially at the rate they get contaminated.
If you are in extreme conditions such as racing or major off-roading then you should know what else to do to your filter to keep other objects out.
