[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-Sep-02 AT 06:15 PM (EST)]i was thinking about getting a 93-97 ranger ext. cab 2wd either 3.0L or 4.0L to run back and forth to college with. i also want one cuz they have a lot of aftermarket parts for them. what are the best choices. im not sure if the 4.0L was avabile in the 2wd rangers or not, and i wanted to know if the 3.0L is any good and what is a ranger splash?

what are the hp and ft-lb numbers on the 3.0 and 4.0 engines and which is perfered for someone on a budget of around 3-4G to spend on a ranger.

ps..is there a supercharger for the 3.0 and 4.0? or other aftermarker performance parts.

The 3.0 and 4.0 were both available in the super cab for those years and both are good motors. The 3.0 is approx. 150hp and 165ft/lb and the 4.0 is 160hp and 225ft/lb for those years. I happen to think very highly of the 3.0 engine, so much that I have now owned three in a row. Its a very reliable, long lasting motor and should be easier to find than the 4.0, but if your like a whole lot of power, look for a 4.0 engine. I am 35 and not a lead foot so the 3.0 is fine for me. The best thing is try to test drive both and see if the 3.0 has enough oomph for you. The splash was an option package that featured the stepside bed when it first became available. That package has been dropped and the stepside bed is now just another option by itself. I'm not sure if superchargers are available, but if so would cost half as much as you are wanting to spend on the whole truck . Happy hunting.

not a speed demon, im used to a slower engine (300 i-6) but i still love it. anyway i wanna make it a competition truck for DB audio drag so speed isnt a concer, but i was just curious to see what the aftermarket provided. i do think i will go with the 3.0 mainly its easier to find and cheaper. thanx for the reply.

The 4.0 in my truck has been a great engine to me and I redline the hell out of it all the time.yes the 4.0 did come in 2wd and a better supercharger would be the BBK screw type supercharger. You can find it in summit magazine, It will give you 45-50 percent more power and it is the same price if not cheaper than the vortec and you wont have to worry about it breaking at all.Plus you can get a throttle body(66 milimeter)and headers for a 4.0 through BBK also. GO to www.bbkperformance.com

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Oct-02 AT 08:51 PM (EST)]I know were your comming from with the ol' I6. I had one in an 88 f-150. There is a tremedus difference between the I6 and my new 4.0. Mines in a 94 stx extended cab and even with the much bigger factory tires(265/75/15(31x10.50) it will walk right past the I6 at half throttle. Although i think the 300 had a much nicer, meaner, get out of my way sound over the carish sounding 4.0. One of my buddies has a 93 ranger 2wd regular cab with the 3.0 in it and it offers plenty of power while delivering very good gas milage.(granted i could still embarasse him with the 4.0.)
