C-6 burning up
My 87 6.9 f250 with 130k mi is having transmission problems. Second and third gear are slipping pretty bad and it doesn't like to shift gears. I bought this truck last year and the trans has never seemed right, now I guess I know why. I found a remanufactured transmission from advance auto for $650 so I'm thinking I ought to just swap it out. I've replaced automatic transmissions before but never on a diesel. Are there any special problems with this or any special tools needed? I've though pretty hard about trying to find a 5-speed to swap into it but I don't know if it will be worth the hassle.

A tranny jack and replace the stock tranny cooler (if equiped with one) with a bigger one. Make sure when you order the tranny its for a diesel and not a gasser they are different. I thick it wuld cost double to put the 5 speed in with all the parts you would have to buy.

Consider a tranny from Jet Performance (http://www.jetchip.com/) They build very tough automatics.
If you do 5sp swap you'd probably be better off finding a cheap doner truck than buying individual parts.
