alright, i am working on a bulid up of my 1980 f-250 and have decided to make it a shortbox. instead of cutting the frame up i am looking into changing frames but have had no luck in finding a shortbox frame(117"). the only one i have found for a reasonable price in my area is a 4x4 frame and my truck i 4x2 so what are the differences. is the frame width the same?, are the rear leaf spring brackets the same? are the holes already drilled in the frame to bolt the twin-I beam brackets on?. what about the engine cradle, is that different depending on 4x4 or 4x2 or even on different engines.
i always thought the frames were the same within the same gvwr (1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, ect) but i could be wrong, ive always noticed theres holes not used on a frame, they have to be there for a reason, on my 3/4 g.m. there were mounting holes for the overload leaf spring rests even though my truck wasnt set up for overload springs. you could take pictures and measurements with you to the "for-sale" frame and see if it would work for you.
80-86 f250 frames are NOT the same for 2wd and 4wd
coil radius arms for 2wd, leafs for 4wd (rears are the same)
a F150 ttb dana44 4wd front end will bolt into a F250 2wd frame.
the problem using a f250 2wd front end in a f250 4wd frame is not I-beam brackets(f250s use a ttb axle set up), it is the radius arm brackets. that are not there. you would need to strip the leaf brackets off and redrill the frame.
80-86 f150 frames ARE the same for 2wd and 4wd
