Unhappy piston slap

My 97 F-150 5.4 has pretty bad piston slap. I was told to not worry about it, but I can't stand the noise at cold start. Did I buy a dud? Please, can any one help me with some information? It has 88,000 miles and it looks to have been well taken care of. It was a one owner vehicle and I got a report on it and it appears that it has had no problems. If piston slap is OK, then I guess I will have to live with it, but if not, then I will still have to live with it because I can't afford a new engine anyway. Any information I can get will surely be appreciated, thanks a million!

piston slap isn't a good thing, the wrist pin or bushing on the connecting rod at the piston is where you would get the slop at.

It is due to the pistons having short skirts. It seems to be pretty common on these engines as well as the LS1 GM engines. It should go away as the engine warms up and the heat expands everything. Ford says it's OK?

Thanks. Yes, Ford says that piston slap is normal, however they are replacing engines with slap that are under warranty. If piston slap is OK, then they would'nt replace them under warranty or not.
