Has 147 K miles. I've been using Motorcraft oil 10W30 and Motorcraft filters.
Even after only 1,000 miles, the oil is really black. What is a good cleaning oil or? I have read many posts here but am confused. It is a 4.0 V6. Any help appreciated.
I have a 4.0L V6 in my '92 explorer, which now has 201,138 miles. I found that 15w40 seems to work better in my engine, to control blowby and improve ring seal. This is supported by used oil analysis, where the 10w30 would come back fuel diluted, and the 15w40 did not. Also it seems to run smoother on the 15w40.
Since winter is coming up, I would suggest a 5w40 synthetic in your engine.
Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w40 for winter. In summer you dont need to spend the money on synthetic, just get a 15w40. My personal favorite 15w40 is Mystik JT-8, I dont know if you can find that, if you cant just get the Rotella 15w40.
Another Q please. I assume that if I do the Seafoam thing, and there is significant smoke and other visible things, that I would need to do another oil change right after that. Does that seem reasonable? Thanks again.
Yeah, it makes a humongus cloud when you use it! If ever you wanted to **** off neighbors, this is the thing!
I dont see a need to change oil afterwards, since the stuff *should* go right out the exhaust valve. However having said that, I'd do the seafoam thing right before the next scheduled oil change, just to be safe.
I was thinking that with that higher mileage, some of the Seafoam may get to the crankcase. That's why I probably would do the oil change at that time.
