Explorer instrument cluster removal
I have a 1996 Explorer and I had the speedometer replaced a few weeks back. It works great now, but like a goof I helped my mechanic try to figure out how to remove the guages, and we did the unthinkable: we removed the dials!
So now my gas and oil pressure guage are not reading an accurate level.
QUESTION: Do I, or can I remove just the clear plastic face of the cluster housing without removing the whole darn thing from the dash, to gain access to the two dial that need to be re-set?
Aslo, QUESTION #2: the vehicle has a funky vibration that has been driving me nuts. At freeway speeds I get this weird little annoying vibration, that totally feels like transmition. If I let up on the gas, it goes away, so it's not wheels or brakes. I've done almost everything except replace the tranny. Replaced the drive shaft, tranny mount, serviced the tranny, checked the engine mounts, had the rear differential serviced, had the wheels ballanced and brakes serviced. It's wacky!
Of course the dealer said "oh there's metal shavings in your tranny fluid, you'll hafto replace the tranny for $3200". Thank you Galpin.
So I took it to my tranny guy and he looked at it and said, "it's not the tranny , it's your wheels.
So I took it to my tires and wheels guy and they balanced rotated and aligned it, but the vibration is still there.
I took it to my two other mechanics and had the drive shaft and tranny mount replaced, and the rear differential serviced, but the nagging little problem is still there.
I was talking to a friend of mine the other daywho has a 2004 Explorer and she said she had the same problem with hers, only it turned out to be some sort of solenoid or relay that tells the tranny when to shift. A simple and quick fix.
Anyone else have this sort of nagging vibration mystery that they SOLVED?
Brian
