I have a 1986 extended cab 2wd with 351w motor is on its last legs I also have an old 1974 302 that runs good can I just drop in the 302. eliminating all emissions and computer controls. the 302 has an old fashioned point dist may be even older than the 1974 truck it is currently in. thanks scott
If you don't like points (like me), you can try to find a Duraspark distributor, go with a MSD box and distributor, or just convert your system over to Pertronix electronic ignition. The Pertronix route is cheap, easy, and dead reliable.
You will need a different flywheel, as the 351W is configured for a 50 ounce imbalance, and the 302 is figured for a 28 ounce imbalance. You'll just need a flywheel off of a pre 1980 302 or 351W.
will the torque converter off the 351 work the 302 has a flywheel but the truck the 351 is in has a slushbox have not looked at tranny yet but looking at what ones were used it is either an aod or a c6
It might not work out real well. I put an 85 351 in to a 90 Bronco and am having a ton of problems because the cam is to much for the computer, also there isn't enough vacum for the transmission to shift right. I have asked around to alot of differnent people and all have said the same thing. Leave carbs in carbs and efi in efi unless your gonna change every thing out on the project.
am only going from 4 bbl carb to 2bbl carb so should improve the mileage as for hill climbing we don't have many of those in florida . the 302 is a non computerised engine with an old fashioned points distributor only need one wire to run engine no boxes no chips no brainer. will let all know how it runs the 351 is shot the 302 i already own so it is free.

You have it backwards, all 351W and pre 82 302 are 28 oz imbalance, the 82 up 302 are 50 oz imbalance. I think you should be able to use the flexplate off the 351W on the 302 you are putting in, as long as the 302 is pre 82.
i turned out to need flexplate junk yard $30 I know the new places like to fancy themselves parts recycling centers but they do not have parts for vehicles this old so i go to the old fashioned junkyard. Now if only i had not cracked the tranny bellhousing lining the beast up. Oh and another tip remember to remove pilot bearing before putting former std tranny to slushbox.
One other overlooked problem is the oil dipstick. On the older Fords the cars had the dipstick in the timing cover and the truck were in thru the side of the oil pan. Sometime in the mid eighties they made all 302's with the cutout on the left side of the block below the #7 & 8 cylinders. The dipstick goes thru the block into the pan on cars and trucks alike. I put an older 302 in a 90 Bronco and there was no place for a dipstick. I had to use the pan for the 90 to fit the Bronco. I had to use the 90 timing cover so the serpentine belt water pump would fit. No place for a dipstick.
