Well guys I went to change my oil in my 996 mile 2004 4.6 this morning at the 1000 mile mark. I went to Wallyworld yes that great mart to buy my filter and oil because they have actual Motorcraft products. I got to the shop and drained my oil and wiped everything down and then removed my filter and went to put the new one on and................IT WOULDN'T FIT!! The computer at "the mart" said to buy a Mortorcraft filter FL-400S but when the book at the shop was checked for an 03 f150 it looked more like my 04 model than the FL-400S. I made sure I hadn't looked up a Lightning or Heritage model so what gives? What is the Motorcraft number for the new 04 4.6 oil filter? Is it the same as the 03 and Heritage? I still don't understand why they don't put the filter on the back vertically near the tranny like on old engines. What filter do I need to buy next time? Does the FL-400S go on the 5.4 and Wallymart just got it wrong?
"The 4.6L engine is produced with two different oil filters depending on which engine plant is was produced in. Please refer to the label on the
engine, on the valve/cam cover, to determine which replacement oil filter to use for your application. If the label shows “REP” it uses oil filter number FL-820. If the label shows “Ford Windsor” it uses oil filter number FL-400. The correct oil filter must be used as previously described."

My valve cover says REP and it is a vin code W or romeo built block so it looks like the FL-820 for me. Are there any variation to the FL-820 I should know about like a FL-820A or a FL-820B? I hate when things like this happen.
WOW, that's pretty stupid on Ford's part. Why in the world would they make the same engine in the same truck with two different filters? They had a good thing going for many years where they used the FL-1A in a bunch of different truck engines. Everything from my '71 F100 to my '94 Ranger 4.0 all used the FL-1A (6 different trucks/ motors). Now they have multiple choices for ONE engine?
Which brings up another question. Is my engine a leftover stock from 2003 or before and all 2005 and up will have a FL-400S or will it be two different filters forever? The filter looked like it would fit but the threaded hole was too small. The gasket was in the right place and right diameter though. The body was a little slimmer and longer on the FL-400S.
