8.8 renew

Any tips or websites, on rebuilding the limited slip differential? Truck has 160K on rear end, and will now only spin one tire in loose gravel, so it's time for a renew of the LS. Also, I have new u-joints installed, but still have 1/2" of driveshaft rotation with transfer/transmission in neutral. Suggestions?

The 1/2" of "slack" is normal and acceptable. Part of it is the rear end backlash and the other part is the transfercase chain and probably some from the transmission. I've noticed a 4x4 has more slack than a 4x2 from the TC...I've owned two 95 F-150s, 4wd and 2wd. But as for the LS, all you have to do is go to a ford dealer and get a 8.8 traction lok rebuild kit. It'll give you new clutches and shims. Just replace the clutch pack (steel packs as well) and keep the original size shim. You don't have to remove the carrier to do this, just pull the shafts, pinion shaft, and the side/spyder gears.

Thanks for the advice. I'm glad to hear I don't have to dismantle the entire differential to renew the limited slip.
I get a surge and an intermittent "thump", that really feels like it is differental generated. I had thought the 1/2" play could be a contributor. Could a worn out LS cause such symptoms?
