What is the procedure for timing?

Hi Guys

What is the procedure for setting timing? How do ya know if #1 is at TDC on the compression stroke or end of the exaust stroke?

Where does the Dist. rotor have to be when you find TDC?
Is TDC on the compression? is that when both valves are colsed?

Will it run if you it is on the exaust stroke?

Can this be done without removing the valve cover?

Thanks

If when you rotate the motor by hand with the #i spark plug removed you will feel the air rushing out of the hole you are at compression stroke. I will stick an wooden rod in the hole and watch the rod. mark it where the rod comes out of the spark plug hole and rotate the engine. when it sticks out as far as it can you ate at top dead center. install the distributer with the rotor pointing at #1 plug at the cap and install dist. set up timming light and set timming to what ever the factory recommends some where around 8degrees before top dead center. This is the way I was told to do it. there is a proper way but you will have to tald apart stuff . If any body see's somthing I did wrong please let me know

I think you would feel air on both the compression and the exhaust stroke.
On the other hand, the rotor would be pointing at cylinder #1 ONLY at the end of the compression stroke, ready to fire.
Both valves would be closed at TDC then, but the exhaust will be opening soon.
No need to touch the valve cover.
All you need is to loosen the distributor hold down bolt so you can rotate it, a timing light to have connected to #1 wire, clean off the little tag down by the harmonic balance (underneath), It should flash when the little groove on the balancer is aligned with the 8 degree before TDC. My 83 calls for 6 degrees BTDC.
Don't use the timing marks on the drivers side of the block.
Alot of people have problems...no line on balancer, etc.
If you have that kind of bad luck, I'd set it by ear, then set idle.
