somewhere i read in this forum that the std 8.8 rear under the 97-up f150 was the same one used on late model rangers, except a bit shorter axles. in looking at a friends '98 ranger 4 x 4, it does look the same. (the shape of the hsg, no. of bolts) mine is '01 2 x 4. is this true? i wouldn't think these 2 trucks would have the same rear end. thanks...paul
The 8.8 is overkill for a Ranger, and proof of that is in how many 302 swappers get by with a 7.5 rear axle (well, towing 2 tons with a 302 and 7.5 is another story, I bet), and it's used all across the RWD Ford lineup, so why mess with what works?
The 8.8 has been used for years. In 80's F150's, 5.0 Mustangs, TurboCoupe T-Birds, Big cars (Crown Vics, etc.). It is a good rearend and the ring and pinions are are interchangable. The 97-03 trucks used them unless you got the 5.4L. These have 9.75 rearends.
