Wow, sounds like a serious PROJECT to my simple mind!!!!
would it take a new steering column for the wire harness ?
or at least a serious part of the wiring harness if it's not there....
Have you considered maybe replacing the radio with one that has a remote control ?
might be better for your time and effort and money

Pioneer makes a great line of head units that are remote capable, and they have a nice steering wheel remote as well... Both are available on Ebay for not too much scrap. (I just got a nice head unit at a local pawn shop and used my old steering wheel remote from the deck in my Ranger... Total cost? under 100 bucks... Can't beat that!)
