Question Too many processes?

When I open my task manager and look up what processes are running, I find 48 to 60 open and running. Some are weird looking like "WkCalKem*****" and stuff. Which ones should be running, or all of them? No computer guru, thanks for ANY help,

48-60!@$!@$!
holy :P

I think a virgin installation of Windows XP has like, 8-10 processes. Then add the different installed programs and drivers that install stuff that should be running in the background, along with the programs you have open.

You can always take the full name of the process and do a google search on it, and see what turns up.

Get Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search and Destroy, pretty sweet spyware/adware/browser hijack/etc removing software.

Here is a list of Windows critical processes I know of:

svchost*****
explorer*****
spoolsv*****
lsass*****
winlogon*****
csrss*****
smss*****
System
System Idle Process

The average new printer seems to come with about 5 new processes you don't need. Scanners, Cameras, Antivirus you name it. Lexmark products may have dozens of important little programs, like telling you how many seconds your printer has been turned on, or in your case the calender reminder. It's just sitting there burning up RAM waiting for something you scheduled in your works calender...You know, all those important dates that you inputed.
Anyway, try this to identify them... http://www.answersthatwork.com/Taskl...s/tasklist.htm

And this to kill them...
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/fr.../procexp.shtml

Honestly, the average PC only needs something like 5 things running to fully function. You will be happy that you shut some of those things down.

Try this program, http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html It breaks down what is running on your computer and tells you what its function could be, example would be a dailer or a highjacker for a browser. I would use this and ad-ware. Always remember to search "google" for all ***** before removing them

Yep.....I have 33 running that arent listed on the tool bar below. But thats okay.....its my pc at work......who knows what nasty stuff they have back there. Actually its almost all windows and server stuff running by the looks of it.
I know its not likely spyware and such junk. We run behind a physical firewall, plus spyware search and destroy kinda stuff running every few hours.

Beats me.....I just work here.
Actually.....we are responsible for cleaning up after our own web surfing on our individual systems.
The server does have its own protocal thingie and stuff for keeping itself all cleaned up. I really have no idea when what where why or how much. Thats the IT gurus game.
Really, I just work here.....and even that is open to interpretation.

Well, thanx to the other posts, I'm running Leaner. Are there any other helpful sites other members want to share with a less experienced surfer in order to stay hacker safer/pirate safer?

You may want to try Pc pitstop which will tell you if your computer is running the best that it can. I assume that you have did all the updates from microsoft which is good way to keep your computer hack free. Oh ya also may want to download spybot which used with ad-adware keeps everthing clean and there is also AVG anti-virus which is free and can be found at griftsoft.com....

Another GREAT website is annoyances.org . I've been using it for years. It has been around almost since the beginning of the Windows operating system and there's literally weeks of reading in there. Not to mention the forums if you don't have the time to read it all.
And you've got to love the name!
