I just had the automatic hubs and the lower ball joints replaced on my 99 Ranger. Now whenever I go slow, around 5 or 10 mph, there is a high pitched whine from the drivers side front. I took the truck back to the dealer, and they said that something with the brakes was out of place, and they put it back. The noise is still there. I took the wheel off myself, and the dust shields aren't rubbing, the rotor looks fine, and the brakes seem fine. I don't know what to do now. I don't really want to take it back to the dealer because it seems as if they don't know what they are doing! Anybody have any suggestions? I really appreciate it.
I had a post "New Ranger...Bad noise...HELP" about a week ago..should be on the first page or so of the forum still. Anyway, I have the same issue. I'm trying to figure out what it is myself. A few people said it's the dust shield in the hubs...I went to Ford today and they said it's not. I dunno...trying to figure it out though because you are right..it's not sounding good.
I also found out today that there is no manual hub replacement for our vacuum-operated hubs. I guess we are stuck with these auto. hubs that have a bad reputation.
My 98 4x4 XLT does this on occasion. My stepdad's 98 explorer did the same thing. He took his to the dealership where he bought it, and they fixed it free under warranty. I (think) it was some type of dry bearing or something... He can't remember, and meanwhile no one knows why mine does it either (and I'm no where near the place he bought his explorer). I'll keep asking around and let you know what I can find out....
Took it back to the dealer today and they finally got it fixed. "The front wheel seals were not seated all the way in. Seated seals in knuckles." Those were the mechanics words on the invoice. No more noises as of yet. I bet the dealer enjoyed me driving all around their lot at low speeds yesterday, letting the squeal echo off all of their brand new cars and trucks! It got so loud to the point where it hurt my ears.
