I'm gonna be the proud owner of a 1966 f100 352 with 3 on the tree tomorrow. It needs some stuff but is road worthy.I will be following this forum for tips and ideas.I prolly wont do a lot until spring but if anyone is in the Northern Virginia area I would like to see what you have done to your truck.I'm sure I'll have a ton of questions for you guys soon.
Mid-Atlantic Slick 60s Chapter
Probably too late notice, but we're having a little get-together in Delaware on Sunday. About 20 guys, free food. Stop by if you can!
They are a great bunch of guys, too! I've met many of them, and you will find it well worth your time to go. You'll see a slick on a rotisserie, a frame with a 460 minus the body, and get to see the insides of how your truck looks BEFORE you start the work.
And, you'll see the others' projects as well, and get so much cool advice and better friendships.
It will be some of the best times you'll ever spend.
And, that chapter even has a Lady Slick! Yep, a wrenchturner, and she knows her stuff. (Sorry, she's already married - to another slickster too. They each have one! Can you imagine the arguments they must have? Probably something like this: Instead of "you spend too much money on that stupid truck!" it is now "You don't spend enough money on MY truck!")
Seriously, they are all great folks, and I would HIGHLY recommend you get to Delaware and visit with them this Sunday. It is less than 2 hours from where 95 and 495 meet in Northern DC.
If you get to go, please give my regards to them for me. Tell them its from the Banjopicker, and they'll know.
The brakes failed before I could test drive it.There was too much rust and both cab mounts and pans were rusted out.The truck came with a 6 and someone had put in an 8.Thanx to this forum I saved myself a lot of grief.Good news is I found a 1965 250 camper special 352/automatic.The motor was rebuilt a few years ago but the rear mainseal leaks as well as the trans seal.Body is orig and straight but has some rust in the usual places.floorboards and cab mounts orig and perfect. The front hood lip is rusted(surprise). Is it hard to install power steering in this thing? The truck has not been started in over a year and they guy is not inclined to mess with it.the truck was parked at a house next to where I was working and I left a card on his door asking if he wanted to sell it,He called me back today and told me all he knew about the truck.I offered him $1000.00 and he was gonna check with his wife. What should I look for on this truck?
Don't be so sure it's the rear main that's leaking. The intake end gaskets on FE's are legendary for leaking, and it will often leak onto the bellhousing and look like a main seal leak down below.
All buying rules apply to the F250 as well. The downside to the 250 is the 8 lug wheels (virtually no aftermarket replacements) and the really low gear ratio (limits top speed). Both are correctible by turning it into a 100 with donor parts.
I will be picking it up monday. It hasn't run for a year so I'm gonna change all of the fluids before I try to light it up.I'm sure it will run and then I can figure out what to do from there.I'm sure I'll have lots of questions next week.
