Dealer Scam????

Has this happened to anyone else? This has happened to me three times and my inlaws twice!

Two weeks again it happend AGAIN! I worked a price with the dealer- 40405.39 out the door. I explain to the salesman when I arrived- this is an out the door price- I will not pay any more if you miscalculated the tax etc.

Then the finance guy says, "oh, we charged you the wrong tax rate, you owe us another $369.63". Then I state, "this price was already agreed upon- I did not figure the tax rate- you did, I do not know the tax rates, you do". I provided my name and address, etc. Finally - they agree to "eat the difference".

Then 2 weeks later the accounting department sends me a bill for $369.63.

Same story- for the fifth time!!

What do you think- has this happened to anyone else. Should I pay it, throw the bill away, or raise holy heck?

No, I would not throw it away, I would raise hell. I gotta say though, if they did this to me once, that would have been the last time they ever sold anyone in my family a new vehicle. You must be a glutton for punishment

Do they have any documents signed by you agreeing to pay this amount? Car dealers have you sign all kinds of papers. I imagine the dealer has something to base the bill on. I would raise heck too, but they may win at the end. Good luck.

These are always so tough to call, and bear with me, as I do try to lok at this from both sides. Anyone can make a mistake, an honest mistake. If it's on the price of the vehicle, then the dealer should eat it as long as it's in writing. Sales tax is another thing, as the dealer doesn't keep that, it's forwarded to the state. In that case, I say the tax is the tax, and you have to pay it. BUT: you say this is the FIFTH time this has happened? All at the same dealership? Sounds fishy to me. There are dealers that make a living out of "making mistakes," if you catch my drift.

They owned by the same company? Auto dealers may have several different names on the doors, but all trace to same corporate ownership, for example United Auto. Example is Peoria, IL. Several dealerships with different names on the door, selling different marques, but all owned by one company - Uftrings.

Are you shopping in a different county than where you live? In some states, counties charge sales tax at differnt rates. If you do not tell the dealer where you live, then they cannot properly calculate the tax.

The only way around it is to have the vehicle delivered to your address.

Here in ohio they have to have your current address to legally make the sale. It sounds to me like someone is not calculating the tax figures correctly at the state level, then the state send the dealer a bill, which is passed on to the buyer.
