I have a (early 70ish) 302 that has a water pump with the inlet on the drivers side. The dampner is the 3 bolt version. The belt will squeel all day long because the crank and water pump are not in-line with on another. Is there any water pump out there that will fit with a 3 bolt dampner and v-belts and keep the inlet on the drivers side? I know my options if there isnt such a pump but one can hope. Thanks for any help.
the pullies arent the problem. They were bought from March and they have done well for me in the past. The problem is that it is an early model 302 with a late model 302 pump. The bolt patterns fit and the rotation is fine its just that the crank pulley is a 3 bolt version (289, 302)and the pump I think is designed to work with the later 4 bolt version. I was told that the pump would work but it does have a slight alignment problem. Maybe the problem is in the timing cover as I believe it is a 289 cover but I thought that they were all virtually the same for the 302
I had a simular problem with this. if you put a washer behind the pulley it should put the water pump pulley in line with the crank pulley. at least mine worked out this way. (1969 302, 3 bolt balancer, 1980 timing chain cover, 1980 water pump) 1980 f-150.
I just went through a similar problem. I have an early model 302 timing chain cover. I put a late model water pump in and it wanted to circulate the coolant the wrong way out through the lower hose. It would suck air everytime the thermostat would open and boil out the radiator. I replaced it with the early model pump and it worked fine. Unfortunately I need a different radiator with the bottom outlet on the pass side to permanenly fix the cobbled hose I have in it.
In the process of making the wrong pump fit I had to cut, weld and modify the alternator bracket and shim up the water pump pulley with washers. Then I had to cut and reweld the bracket back with the correct pump. As far as the washers, they work, but most washers are not all the same size and it is difficult to make all the bolts the same size without having wobble. You might be better off cutting a piece(s) of metal to fabricate a spacer.
