Hey yall. My truck is an 87 F-150 Lariat XLT, and as far as we know, the lifters are bad. I only need for someone to give any hints or tips on the best way to get down in the egine, and put the new ones in. Thanks and God Bless
Well, if your truck is fuel injected, you need to remove the upper and lower intake which includes the throttle body, you will need to unhook the fuel lines from the fuel rail. And the wiring involved. The valve covers will need to be removed along with the rocker arms and pushrods. It's possible to do this without removing the distributor, but a lot easier if you do. Pull the old lifters and install the new ones. I'm assuming this is a V8. other wise ignore me. Money is always tight, but if your lifters are shot you're probably due for a new camshaft too, (More work). Anyway, If you have decent tools and a weekend you can handle this job. By the way, cool thing about fords, you don't have to adjust the valves, it's all preset with the rockers. Fu...n chevys
If the lifters are worn on the cam end and "mushroomed" you may not be able to pull them up through the lifter bores... Using force to pull them up will damage the lifter bores which could require a macine shop to fix (read complete disassembly).
It has been done many times (including myself) as Egor described... just use caution when removing the lifters... I also agree with Egor concerning the cam also... If your going that far into it... just replace it...
