I am a little confused as to where the fuel filter goes on this motor. Curently the motor has an INLINE filter right before the carb, but the replacement filter shows a threaded end, It makes more sense to me to have the fuel filter BEFORE the fuel pump so the diaphram doesn't get damaged, and the replacement filer seems to be able to thread into the pump but then the fuel line will not work, since the other end of the filter has a hose fitting, I suppose I could cut the fuel line end off and use a hose but that would not seem right. How is the fuel filter suppose to go on this motor?
I replaced the fuel filter today with one that looked similar, WOW what a difference, the fuel coming out of the old filter was very rusty looking, now I have a clear case fuel filter and the fuel is nice and clean, major difference in the way the truck runs too.
I also found out the fuel filter is in the proper location just before the carb.
If you've got a Motorcraft (Holley) 4180 4BBL, it's got one of those little brass filters in the body of the carb, on the left front side...right where the fuel line enters the carb. You don't (usually) need to replace it, just take it out and clean it real good with carb cleaner. Be real careful about those threads...it'll leak for sure if you cross thread the fitting into the housing. There should be a spring and a small gasket for the fitting too. I've got a glass inline filter on the fuel line also, just in front of that. Don't know about the '77, but my '85 doesn't have a mechanical fuel pump on the block...my pumps are in the tanks.

yeah min eis mechanical right on the block. Coming off the drivers side of the carb at the front there is a ball fitting with a tube where the fuel line connects tot he tube with a rubber hose and a clamp, no sign of a filer, unless its right inside that ball fitting. The truck runs a heck of a lot better now, I am surprised how much of a difference it made.
the carb is in desparate need of a rebuild, its leaking fuel out the front bowl at the bottom, there is a small puddle ont he lower intake, plus there is a vacuum line down there on the passenger side that pops off and is soaked with fuel, I may just buy a whole new carb instead of rebuilding, what do you guys suggest for a new carb? I would like a little more power but not needing a lot, I may get a new lower intake to match the carb as well, what do you guys suggest?
