Maybe I've just gone blind, stupid or both but I can't seem to be able to search the forums. I want to find out info on updating my 2004 X 4x4 suspension and recall reading lots on specifically; 1)Hellwig sway bars, 2)Rancho shocks and 3) Bilstein shocks. Any ideas on searching or any of the suspension improvements would be a great help. I'm basically looking to improve my ride quality and reduce the "body roll" when entering curves &/or turns. BTW I've put a "level-up" kit on the front (raising it about 2" and an inch block in the back and run 285's. Thanks.
I've noticed ford-trucks.com has a lot of technical problems, and this seems to be par for the course.
We also have a SITE Announcement forum and a User Feedback forum where the search problem has been addressed mroe times that the Gas vs. Diesel debate!
The site in undergoing a tremendous upgrade behind the scenes. I wouldn't call them technical "problems", per se.
Thanks guys. Monsta, it appears I've got a factory front sway bar and none on the rear. Is it wise to get both front and rear Hellwigs. Also, it seems Hellwig (example; SHOX.com shows only one Hellwig available for the 4x2 only) and Rancho show very limited products for the '04 4X4 X. Are the '03 and '04 any different as far as suspension is concerned? Thanks again.
I got my rear Hellwig from JC Whitney. They had the best deal at the time. I only did the rear. I didn't feel a need to do the front after installing the rear bar.
03s and 04 s are not any different that I'm aware of. 'Bout the only thing I see as far as suspension goes is the plate that used to be on the passenger side rear axle shock mount is no longer there.
Monsta - I think you mis-typed....
I only did the REAR.... too
that's what I did to my 02 X and got it from JC whitney as well - part # 7643....
best $135 I ever put into the 4x2.. no more leaning into the turns trying to keep level
call them and talk to someone... u might be able to sweet talk them into a discount like I did... 15% off and free third day shipping... made mine a bargain....
then paid an off road shop $40 to install it... and I was flying thru the slaloms
I did both front and rear hellwig's from Summit. $163.+ each, ground shipping is included. Amazing difference.
Also went with Monroe reflex, rather firm but very good control.
Brakes are superstop's (rotors and pads), also a big improvement.
But I think I earned the "Professional Idiot" award for the next piece:
I cut the bottom doughnut off of the front bumpstops.
Now I measured everything twice before I did this and all looked like it would clear.
Except I forgot about the front sway bar. I had that off when I measured.
Nice dent in the oil pan, about 1/2 inch.
Luckily, no leaks and no damage!
Everything else clears and otherwise does not bottom out.
Now I am going to replace the front bumpstomps and the oil pan.
