I have been reading the other thread on the '98 detonating problem, which mirrors my own problem. I have a 4.6 w 123k, so a plug change is in order. I want to know what plug to get( not copper), I don't want to change my plugs every 20k. I have sprayed the MAF, but where is the DPFE so I can try that, but I must admit after reading the other thread about reprogramming the 5.4, to solve this problem sure sounds like the ticket.
just get Motorcraft double platinum plugs and omnispark or motorcraft ignition wires. make sure u get stainless ignition wires so u dont have to worry about water effecting the engine
I have a 98 4.6L and it's running fine on 87 octane.I had some pinging before as well as a check engine light showing lean on both banks.I cleaned the MAF with electronic cleaner and reset the computer but got the check engine light again a week later.I then used throttle body cleaner on the MAF(sprayed the hell out of it).No pinging or check engine light for the last 3 months and going. Also,I didn't appreciate the know-it-all with the ultra-confident and smirking face at AutoZone(who reset my computer for free) saying I needed to change all my oxygen sensors because that was all it could be and he'd been in the business 17 years.Beware.
The thread I was referring to is mentioned in another thread on pinging, the guy said it was in the 97-03 section. The same thread" 98 4.6L still pinging", I have been Keeping an eye on. They mention about re programming the pcm, which sounds like the way to go, but it seems everyone thats doing it has a 5.4 (good for you ,grberglund), I'm waiting to see if it works for a 4.6. I have to run 93 in it to stop the rattle, but I don't get a CEL,Let me know what you find guys. thanks
