I have a 88 Ranger 4x4 that will not go into overdrive. It would not work at all in any gear, I checked the pressure in all gears they read ok. I changed the torque converter and it now shifts in all gears except it slips in overdrive. Does anyone know the problem? I'm looking for a manual for the transmisson.
Thanks Eric, I replaced the torque converter and run the truck on the road. It shift thought all gears in "D" drive, 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and "R" reverse all run okay but when I shifted into Overdrive it would not go into gear and it made a whining noise. Is overdrive electrical or hydraulic?
Your problem is likely a failure of internal mechanical components in the overdrive section of the transmission. I just overhauled mine with almost the identical problem. All external tests I did indicated that there was nothing wrong since the failure was caused by mechanical parts failure in the clutch/sun gear assembly, which don't affect pressures, etc. These transmissions that go like this either fail with no drive at all, so they won't go at all, or with everything working fine but overdrive and usually no torque converter lockup.
You can likely drive it for quite awhile with it working this way, but eventually it will fail completely on you. If you have towed in overdrive or driven it hard a lot, then this is likely your problem.
Mine also will NOT shift into the forth gear (overdrive), nor will the lock-up torque converter lock up. It shifts from first through third fine, and it's been like this for 3 years now. Also, when I let off the throttle, it freewheels, as if in neutral. But when I step on the gas, it will still accelerate. I have been told that these transmissions are only good for about 100K, and that's almost exactly what mine has on it. From what I'm reading in the forums, it sounds like the forth gear is always the first to go. (1985 V6).
Yes 4th is the weak link especially if you tow or plow with the vehicle and 100 K miles is the norm for them to last. My last one did do 200 K though. From what you describe I'll bet I can tell you exactly what has happened to it and if it failed the way I think it did then you can likely drive it a long time this way without problem. It cost me about $500 to fix it plus my time. I did a complete overhaul of the transmission for that including a new torque converter. It runs like new now.
Hey Chickenmantoo, thanks for that reply. Hey alopez1, I hope you don't mind us chatt'n in your post. I hope you learn something helpful. Chickenmantoo, I really like my truck. And, despite it's age, it's in good shape, and I DO INTEND to do major work on it, including the tranny. I WAS going to replace it with a fully rebuilt Jasper, but at the tune of $1200 bucks. OUCH!! You seem to know a bit about it. I would like very much to hear more of what you have to say. This tranny was like this when I bought the truck, but I didn't know it 'till it was too late. But, it has been a faithful companion nonetheless. Are there things I should know before making my decision??
