Dead Gas Gauge

I was filling up my front tank on my 92 150...anyways...i topped it off the gas gauge was fine...but the next day it always read empty. It has continued to do that until a day ago...then it worked. Then the following day it stopped again.
Anyone know what might be going on?

There's a short between the sending unit and the gauge. Check all the connectors, and try switching the dash selector switch with a known good one.

I've been having the same problem with my '93 for quite some time. Assuming a person wanted to purchase a new switch, is that a "dealer only" part? I've searched online at O'Reilly, Napa and Autozone and haven't turned up a part at any of those sites.
