I have a 96 explorer xlt 4.0 4x4. 138,000 miles. I am getting the transmission flushed today....should i get the filter changed as well? As far as i know....fluid or filter have never been changed.
I have heard on Car DR type shows that if your transmission has high mileage and has never had the fluid changed, you are better off leaving it alone and not servicing it unless there is a problem. I can't remeber the exact reason given, but it has something to do with the seals leaking after the gunk is washed out.
I flushed my autotransmission with 110,000 miles on it. Droped the pan, and was supprised at all the gunk in it. Cleaned the pan well, and flushed the fluid with the instructions at http://www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/web/pages/at1.html
It worked like a champ. I can not tell if there is a change in how it preforms, but I know it has clean fluid now.
Not too hard, but I used a nice (but cheep) drop cloth, papertowel on one side, plastic on the other, from home depot to keep the driveway clean.
The filter maybe a misnomer, as it is mostly a screen, not the same as say an oil filter.
