timing not right

hello all, i've been having a hard time getting the timing right on my 82 f-100 it has a 351-w . when we installed the motor we didn't see any timing marks and i could never get it just right. i had a friend come over and he tried to time it and said the dist. wouldn't turn enough so he went to pulling plug wires and switching them around then he started to adjust on the carb ( 2 bbl) . well now it still isn't in time and the truck jerks real hard when i give it about half throdle. can someone please tell me how to start from scratch and get this thing in time? thanks for any help

Sounds like you are 180 out. Start by trying to get the dist and plug wires back to where you started. Than remove timing cover bring #1 cyl to tdc. then remove timing chain( be sure not to move the cam while or after doing this), now you can move the crankshaft( since you say you couldnt find any timing marks(there should arrows or something close) make you own, by making a reference mark to where the chain and crank are sitting now, after you remove the chain start by rotating the crank 180 from where it sits and try that. If you really dont have any timing marks anymore you just kinda have to play with it for a while until you get it( be very careful not to move the cam when the chain is off)). Be sure to have a timing light close by so you can fine tune everything when you get it. Good luck! By the way....how bout them TN VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
