Got my 66
I was wondering anybody ever heard of an overdrive retrofit. for this truck.
They are out there, just have to keep your eyes peeled.
However, I thought I'd want one too, but after driving mine on a 1,000+ mile road trip, can't say I really miss it. Does 70 just fine, returned 15 mpg. The overdrives are a bit weak, and replacement parts (new) not really available, so I think I'll stay without.
Congrats on a lucky purchase...same truck I have, except I don't have the a/c.
Are you really sure you need or want an OD transmission? It seems like a lot of expense, effort & work for not very much real gain. None the less here's the answer to what you asked.
It's not really a retrofit since OD was available in them OEM. You just have to get all the switches and cables that go along with an OD, as well as the OD itself to install it & get it to work. Or if you have an OEM service & repair manual or CD, and understand the nuances, you can hook an OD up to make it work like a 2spd axle instead.
Just make sure you get an OD that's 66 or newer because earlier will not have a full syncro gear set. IOW 1st gear is not syncro in earlier units.
