EGR valve problems
I know this isn't a truck but I need your guy's help. I am having problems with my 1987 Cougar with the 302. The service light came on so I hooked it to a scanner and I got a fault code for the EGR valve. I checked the valve and the vacuum line going to it was cracked so I replaced it. Now my car shutters when I go down the road at crusing speed in any gear but everything smooths out when I lightly press on the gas pedal and accelerate. I got tired of this shuttering that I unhooked the vacuum line to it and it runs just fine. I checked the egr valve and it is holding vacuum. I replaced it no more than two years ago. So does it sound like the engine is running to lean? Can the O2 sensors be bad? What are your suggestions? Thanks for your help guys.

The EGR valve may be sticking (first thing that popped in my head). The valve could hold a vacuum during a test, but still stick partially open when it should be fully closed or open. I'd remove it and clean it and see how smooth it functions or replace it. You've already proved by plugging off the vacuum line that the valve isn't functioning properly (I am assuming everything else is plumbed and operating correctly).
