Power Steering Pump Replacement plus a service tip
It's time to replace the howling (what a surprise!) power steering pump on my '92 Ranger (4.0/Automatic. Is there any quality or noise difference between the Ford replacement pump or an aftermarket one? What is the cost difference? Lastly, how much of an effort is it to replace? Any special tools needed? Thanks for your help.
P.S. I just changed the spark plugs and wires on my Explorer and my ranger is the same setup. What a joy or should I say PITA! Here's a hint. To get out the #3 plug (right rear)don't go through the wheelwell like the posts suggest. Just get a spark plug socket that has a hex end (mine is 3/4"). Use an open end/combination wrench from up above and it will come right out. You can't use a torque wrench, but by the time you get to this plug you should have a good idea of how much "ooomph" to put on it.

Ford only makes noisy PS pumps. You can replace them until your face is blue and 99% of them will howl. The aftermarket ones are usually rebuilt Ford pumps and they howl........

Power Steering Pump Replacement plus a service tip
I have several nice quiet Ford pumps. It is dirt and grit scratches that make a high pressure leak path in the pump that causes the howl. Many rebuilt units are merely cleaned and painted. The leak path can be fixed sometimes by surface grinding the pump end plates and rotor. Many times this destroys the OEM surface hardening causing the pump to wear quickly.
Buy a NEW pump and Use a Filter! :-)
Thanks for using FTE!
