Ranger Transmission

Can someone please tell me why my Ford Ranger PU(1996) will not shift into reverse when cold. When I get in it to start of a morning, I will put it in reverse. It will sit there a few moments and then it will ram into gear, the PU will run on about two cylinders and the OD light will come. I have to do this several times to finally get the PU to move. Once the PU gets warm, it runs fine. Any suggestions??

I think if it were mine and I wanted it to last a while I'd let it warm up a bit more before
trying reverse. I think the problem is in the direct clutch seal getting hard and not sealing properly when cold.

Also, it could be the incorrect gear lubricant in your transmission. Ford used transmissions in the Rangers built by Mazda and by Mitsubishi. The two transmissions used different lubricants. Check the tag ON THE TRANSMISSION in this instance to determine which transmission you have; then you can check for the proper lubricant.

My 96' Ford Ranger PU is 2.3L, autotrans. The fluid was changed two months ago, no change in driving. I took it to a specialist last week, he drove it(warm) and it worked fine. It only causes problems when cold. I did put some conditioner in the trans and it has helped some.
