Flywheel
I am currently building a 1949 mercury truck. I am using a late model Ford truck transmission and a 1994 Mustang Motor. The transmission requires the truck flywheel, which is larger then the Mustang, for the starter. Does anyone know if the 1990 truck flywheel is balance the same as the Mustang flywheel(50 oz.). Placing the flyweels side by side, it appears that the truck flywheel has a small weight on it.

I think it is the same balance as long as it can from the same engine size. Is this an automatic or standard? I have a '90 AOD bolted to my '84 Mustang 302 with out changing the flywheel. Can you not use the mustang starter? My starter is from an '83 Grand Marque if that matters.

The imbalance changed '81/82 so you should be ok with those years. I've seen a lot of variation with 302 flywheels - from cast in lumps to welded on tabs. Also they used both 14 1/4" and 13 1/4" flywheels.

The balance should be fine for the years you mentioned. They final balance spec would be the same for both flywheels. The reason that the weight is smaller on the truck flywheel is that it is further away from the center (simple physics). The further from the center of the flywheel, the smaller the size of weight required to acheive the same balance effect. The final balance is obtained by removing material (drilling holes) or adding smaller weights (similar to balancing a wheel and tire. No adjustment on your behalf is needed.
