I have a 90 302 A4OD and when it shifts into OD it sounds like the Driveshaft is falling out. But once it shifts it is fine till it Downshifts out of OD then it won't go into gear untill it slows and I bump the gas pedal. If I put it into D to keep it out of OD the first 3 gears are fine it is just OD. Any suggestions.
'sounds like it's trans re-build time. My stock trans lasted over 100k miles and the beefed trans I replaced it with is going on 250k. I use an external oil filter and cooler with synthetic trans fluid.
I Thought that there might be a pressure adjustment. Because it is fine in all gears it is just going in and out of OD. Once it is in OD it pulls fine.
There are five solenoids in the E4OD tranny all of which are controlled by the PCM. It may be that one is sticking or has failed. But unfortunately, the only way I know to find out is to tear into the tranny. There are no pressure or vacuum controlled components in the E4OD its entirely electronic. Sucks when something electrical goes haywire.
You might try a fluid and filter change and some Lucas transmission oil stabilizer. One other thing to make certain of is that all of your brake lights are working. The BOO (brake on/off) switch sends signal to the PCM about brake application based on amperage drawn through it and if a brake lamp is burned out it can adversly affect tranny shift patterns. I know, I know, silly as it sounds I have actually SEEN these effects on an E4OD and its simply astounding that it can really be something that simple that screws with it.
