Yesterday when I put oil in my truck I noticed a greenish grey sludge inside the oil cap. The oil on the dipstick looked normal. Could coolant be leaking? How can I tell if coolant is leaking into my oil. I remember reading something about this and it sounded bad.
You need to check your radiator as well to see if your coolant looks like chocolate milk. If you have oil in the coolant as well that is a sign of a possible cracked block/cracked head. Usually if you blow a head gasket you just loose coolant into the combustion chamber which is then burned and expelled with the exhaust.
Do you drive lots of miles at a time, or short trips? The "sludge" on the oil cap is not uncommon, and will go away if you drive the truck on a "road trip", unless you have a mechanical problem. If you think there is a problem, do a compression check. That will tell you.
What I have seen if coolant is getting into the block is more of a milky white color, noticible on the dip stick. Check all venting of the motor, PCV valve etc. This ties in with the short trip reply. If you only run short trips, condensation can build up in the engine. Good luck!
