Help w/351m

My problem started when I accidentally put 87 octane in the truck while towing a small trailer up a mountain. THe motor was pinging quite a bit so I babied it to the top. From then on the motor had a pretty loud rattle that sound like valves to me. I thought maybe it was out of time, but that wasn't the problem. I then had a distributor gear break. I repaired the gear, replaced the water pump, installed a new module, edelbrock intake w/egr, & performer carb. The motor still runs about 90%. I still have the pinging, though it doesn't seem as bad. I have been fiddling w/the timing & the air/fuel mixture of the carb but just can't seem to get it where I like it. I had planned on pulling the heads for complete overhauls but my mechanic told me to only do that if the timing chain was broke. It was not but was very loose so we left the heads alone. Any suggestions on what to check. I can tell that the intake & 4brl carb really woke this thing up, but would like it to run a bit better.

Where's your timing set at? Did you re-curve the distributor at all? What 4bbl and intake are you running? Could add a mild cam to compliment them, amongst other things.
