A new oxygen sensor alone can improve gas mileage by as much as 15 percent, according to AutoZone, a car parts store.
anyone know what part this is? i kind of would like it since gas is so high right now, also im wondering how much better gas i will get, i would be happier with at least 20 miles more on my total tank. heh
Oxygen sensors screw into the exhaust system and measure the amount of O2 in the exhaust as an input to the computer. V8's usually have 4 of them, 2 on each each bank of cylinders, one before the catalytic converter and one after. If they fail or their reaction time slows down too much, the computer will set a code and your check engine light will come on. I'm not sure how far the computer will let them go before setting a code so how much it would effect gas mileage on newer trucks is anyone's guess. In any case, if your truck has less than 50k miles on it, you shouldn't have to worry about it anyway. Of course, I'm sure Autozone would love to sell you 4 of them.....
It will cost you at least $50 to $100 a pop at the parts store. I bet you will not notice any difference untill you have about 100k on your truck. If the o2 sensors go bad your ck engine light will come on pretty fast since it is emissions related. In other words dont waste your money their talking about older vehicles.
Yeah those censors really are Pricey. I Did a price check on a new one for my Focus after a buddy of mine "broke" it while doin some work. $100 for 1 on a 2003 4-cylinder. Course the older your vehical the cheaper it becomes.
They are very easy to replace. But they should not go bad until 50K to 100K miles. The check engine light will come on when they go bad. It would be foolish to replace them on a new vehicle.

They are referring to replacing a bad (out of range) sensor, not changing out your new sensors for some "wonder" sensors.
Ford could give you 25 MPG with these trucks if they were forced to. They're not, so you don't get it.
Just a guess, but replacing an "old" sensor can increase your mileage. Replacing a new one with another new sensor will only benefit Autozone. Kind of like the air and gas filter thing.
