I know it's a simple question, but: Are all 300 I6 4.9 Liters? I have a '68 and am about to buy some parts, and I want to make sure they will be compatible.
In 68 it was the 300 though was it? I'm pretty sure in 68 it was the 240 which is essentially the same thing, but you never know what parts will work. Just thought I'd say something.
Excuse me, sir, but you are Only partially correct.
It was the 144/170 Small Block I-6 starting in '60 in the Falcon, Comet, Ranchero & E-100 models, which later evolved into the 200 I-6 in the '64 1/2 Mustang w/ the former models still in production still receiving the upgrade engine as well, the '70s Mavericks & then 2+2's.
In the late '40s the 215 Big Block I-6 was intro'd, which evolved into the 223 in '54, which then evolved into the 262 in '61, finally ceasing production completely on this series of engines in '65-'66.
On top of that in '61 FoMoCo also intro'd the Big Block 240 I-6 which differed in serveral ways from the previous B.B. I-6 w/ one of them being the mounting of the Manifolds on the Right side of the block, that evolved into the 300 I-6 in '65.
I'm currently building a 300 I-6 & looked into using a 240 I-6 head instead of the 300's, but in turns out nothing would be gained really compression wise by doing this.
Cheers

The 300 I-6 was called just that untill FoMoCo became P.C. & started calling them 4.9's somtime during the late '80s early '90s.
The 300 Big block I-6 evolved from the 240 Big Block I-6 which was first intro'd in '61.

Embus2; You are contributing. When anyone starts a thread on this forum, the original question and subsequent answers are a great source of information for the rest of us truck owners. I learned a lot about the evolution of the Ford 6 from this thread. Please don't stop asking questions, I need all the education I can get to keep my old truck running.
Correct me if I am mistaken, the 300 is carburated and the 4.9 is fuel injected
Seams to be the standard naming system for North American engines
one is said in metric one isn't.
1 cubic inches = 0.0163871 Liters
300 cubic inches = 4.916 Liters = 4.9L
302 cubic inches = 4.948 Liters = 5.0L
351 cubic inches = 5.751 Liters = 5.7L
and so on
its like that w/any engine displacement.....it makes no sence to ask if all 300's are 4.9 Liters or if one is different than the other because its all the same unit conversions.
Ford rounds the 351 to 5.8 so as to not be confusing to Chevy owners.
61.2 is the semi-magic number. 1 Liter is approx. 61.2 cubic inches. With this number, you can figure out what a 45 Harley is, why they made 302's, and a host of other important English-Metric questions.
And if you are all huffy and made about metric, just go get 10cc's of morphine.
