Trav54 - Welcome to the forum. Read the sticky article at the top of the Forum titled "Suspension Alternatives...". It contains the pros and cons of all popular front suspension conversions and will help you decide.
As to the 312, I don't have a clue. Plenty of the folks here love the Y-blocks though and there are good sources for stock and aftermarket parts and rebuild info. Using it would definately be the least expensive alternative to swapping in a different motor.

Welcome to FTE! There is lots of information concerning pros and cons of IFS possibilities on a thread titled "Front suspension alternatives for 1948 - 1960 Ford trucks" on this forum page. Very enlightening. Good luck with your project. Steve

My 2c's, Belong to Klassic Haulers of Michigan Club, some have
Volare and some Mustang II. Each are satisfied with results.

I think all those suspensions are good and the one you choose might be influenced by how much you want to spend and how well a fabricator and welder you are. The Volare will require the least fabrication since you don't have to cut your frame off and is probably the least expensive. The Camaro will probably cost about the same as the Volare but requires much more fabrication and welding. The Mustang II is probably the most expensive of the three and requires about the same fabrication skills as the Volare.

In addition there's the Pacer, Ford IFS, Aerostar, Cordoba, and Dakota (did I leave any out?) so there's lots to choose from.

I agree all are good IFS. But if you are interested in air bags don't choose the volare. If you want easy of installation, cheap, and a good ride volare is the way to go.
