I'm building a 331 stroker for a 73 F100. I would like to know if any one has some expiriences with the Hypereutectic pistons - by brands. Ive decided this is the right application that I need/want but looking for input on Keith Black vs Sealed Power vs anyone else. Any expirience you've had with 302 or 331 hypereutectic pistons by any manufacturer, I'd welcome those comments - good or bad. Reliability, sales/service..anything you'd like to contribute.
hypereutectic pistons arent bad they contain a small percentege of silicon to help reduce friction and heat. since there made of from a 390 alloy make the pistons stronger. of course u have other choices of cast or forged. forged is the best and the strongest for like supercharged and race motors. cast is like stock piston i would stay with hypereutectic. keith black pistons i'm not sure about them i havent used the but look at www.summitracing.com or www.jegs.com they should give u some info to help u maybe. and good luck.

also depends on your heads and cam used in your motor. what head are u going to use and what cam? or how much lift it the cam? this will help with a choice of pistons and what your compression ratio is.
stock 73 heads - mild port job, enlarge valves to 1.9/1.6 - 58.3 chambers. I have a truck block with deck height of 8.229 vs the standard 302 8.206 so I drop a touch in compression. Cam is 480 lift/214 duration both sides from Isky - the 264mega. On paper, my compression with flatop would be 10 even, with -10 cc should be about 9.6 which is where I want to be for pump gas.
nice if often wonder if should stroke my 302 but i just say nah not till i have another vehicle and the money to do it. i'd probally bore it no more then 20 over with a good cam and probally retains stock heads and rebuild them but change the cam and in the intake manifold.
I have the benefit of using this as an education tool for my son since the pansy schools around here seem to think that everyone to take art instead of having elbows full of grease. Bright side here though is he get's an education that his friends probably won't have, he smacks up the truck he can fix it since we are building from the frame up. About the only thing we are not tackling...might out of nessecity, is the actual rear end. I have 3.25 gears now, I may rip that all apart to round out the educational process and change to 3.73 gears...just to do it of course.
hey i'm only 20 and i'm automotive program at the college its more then worth it to go. before i started i got ask what i wanted to do for a major i said automotive tech or nothing. i'm not joking either. its fun and educational great hand on experience i've help rebuilt a motor but that was a long time ago. so i'm using this experience well i like to be a mechanic or own my own shop one day.
My son wants to fabricate - much like rides or monster garage. something along that order. that's all great and plenty worthwhile, my charge to him is why be just the guy underneath the car when you can be that and own the shop. He will go to scholl for the technical as well as the business enducation. I just have beef around here with the school boards crying budget on all the welding/wood/automotive stuff and filling the bays with art easels. there's place for everything- not a monopoly like the school is doing here..sorry different soapbox to stand on.
well budget cut to those programs are b.s. but we dont control the budget for school the goverment does which is crap. i agree with not having the bays filled with oil painting fruits. i want to own my onw shop but not sit around i'd rather work its cool your son want to do what jesse james is doing monster garage. thats asome and good luck with that. i can weld but i can only braze with oxy-acetelyne. i hear budgets cuts here too so your not the only place with ******* trying to ruins school cutting stuff.
if u want to make it big in the automotive field look at www.uti-auto-tech.com this is a trade school there are quite a few around the us. give it a look. its a trade school to work in the automotive, diesel, and motorcycle world or work for nascar.
A 331 is a 3.25 crank/5.4 rods@.030 bored over. Standard 302 is 3.0 crank 5.090 rods. Hawks makes a good crank for the dollars - std/std on bearings. I don't like the offset cranks or the turned 351 cranks due to removal/replacement of material - too easy to mess that up.
