Hood hinge repair

Ok, The previous owner of my truck didn't latch the hood one day and it flipped up going down the road and sheared a couple of the rivets in the hinge assemblies. Somehow he found more original rivets and installed them where the sheared ones went and they work.
Problem is, he didn't do a very good job and now they're loose and the hood doesn't shut quite right. I checked our sponsors and the only thing I found was a "new" set of hinges for $200.00 a set which I can't afford right now. There's also a used set on that famous online auction site, but I don't know where they will end up at so....
To save some bucks is there a place where a person can find just the original style rivets maybe? It would be a little more trouble to do, but I have a torch to heat them and it's got to be cheaper in the end. My metal assemblies are still in nice shape so I hate to just trash them. TIA!

There are always hinges on Ebay..and the price isn't even close to the $200...maybe $20?

You misunderstood my post I think. A sponsor has reproductions (or NOS?) for $200.00 a set in their catalog. Ebay ones are way cheaper of course because they're generally used. I was trying to find a source for just the rivets that hold them together since my hinges are good except for the bad rivets.

Here's a link to the photo of one of my hinges. I drilled the bad rivets out and replaced them temporarily with big bolts. There is one rivet sheared in the same place on both sides, so I figured it would just be cheaper to find two rivets than go to all the trouble to buy another pair of complete hinges. BTW, the bolts don't help much either.

No.. I understood. My thinking was you could pick up a used pair of hinges with little expense and not have to bother with trying to fix the ones you have. maybe you could take them to a machine shop and have a shaft of proper diameter installed. The diameter will be critical in order to keep the hinge linkage tight.

That's not a bad idea and it didn't even cross my mind. Thanks, I'll look into that. It should last a lot longer than rivets too.

Question....since the hood flew up with enough force to blow the rivets out, did the holes in the linkages oval out? I bet every joint in those hinges are loose....putting a round shaft in a oval isn't going to get you very far. Have someone slowly raise and lower the hood and look at/feel the hinges ( dont get pinched ) to determine exactly where the slack is....and plan on picking up a new ( used - Ebay ) set! Even the hinges in my 69 are loose....you can see the slack...and when you open the hood all the way up and let go you can watch the linkages "relax" and fall a little. Metal on metal is going to wear...and these hoods are heavy! Just my opinion!

If I was going to repair them, I would make a short bushing out of steel and tack weld over the existing holes. I would size the hole to be a snug fit on some bolts and just bolt the hinge back together with double nuts to make sure it doesn't loosen up.

Personally I think you're wasting your time trying to repair those pos hinges. They are a weak spot design-wise and once they are have been tweaked or poped rivets, you're way ahead of the game by replacing them instead of trying to do a repair. When junkyard shopping, try to find a pair off a '70 and newer, the design is a little better (little).

my brainstorm

Someday I will replace my hinges too. They are tight, but I suspect the springs are weak. Awhile back I had a brain fart, and I installed a pair of gas charged lift rods on my hood, along with orig hinges. Now when I lift hood about 6", it goes up by itself. not hard on the back anymore. Of course you could always go with one of those fiberglass hoods...
