What size angle grinder?

For some reason the search function seems to be gone from the forums?

Anyway, I am going to be doing some bodywork and welding on my 79 F150 this next spring, and am wondering what size angle grinder would be suitable for all around work? 4", 4.5", 5", 7", 9"? I would guess the 7" and 9" are too cumbersome for overkill for grinding welds on body panel repairs? I am hedging towards a 4.5 or 5" model. I forsee not only grinding welds, but also using wire wheels for rust removal, possibly cutting wheels for cutting metal and floor tile.

I recommend the 4" as it is smaller and lighter. It also is easier to get into tighter spots than them big boys.

I've got a 4.5" dewalt and am very pleased with it. I don't use it in a professional capacity, but it works fine for me.

I've got a 4.5" craftsman and i love it. It is the perfect size, and there are a ton of attachments for them. I used a cup shaped knotted wire wheel for the rust on my truck frame, and it work great. It also does well with a cut wheel and grind wheel I recommend a 4.5"

thanks for the input, I also checked out the store to see what sizes had the most goodies for them. I have a Bosch 4.5" on the way! Now...I need to learn how to weld!

Yeah, there seems to be a big difference in the amount of power and quality between the 4" and the 4 1/2". The 4 1/2" is much better.

Word of caution, being typed with the use of 9 fingers. Keep the guard on the angle grinder. I didn't and while cutting a patch panel with my Makita 4.5", I accidentally sawed into my index finger knuckle with the edge of the wheel. I'm certain I hit the bone. It's been a few weeks, still hurts like the "dickens".

Another tid bit, if you do use one of those wire cups for rust removal, get full face shield protection. Those little wires do break off and sting when imbedded into your chin.

A bit of advice, but too late because you have ordered one already. But, get a grinder that has a 5/8" x 11 tpi arbor. The accessories like wire wheels etc are easier to find if you have the 5/8" arbor on your grinder. The metric accessories aren't as easy to find as the standard ones. ...Terry

It has the 5/8 x 11, so I'm good there.
