Talking power steering question ?

HI guys have any of you had problems with the steering box on a 79 F150 4x4 I have replaced the power steering pump and both lines bled the system best I could and still acts like no power steering it is leeking a little from the seal above the pittman arm but not to bad and also sometimes builds up enough pressure to pop one side of the cap up on the reservior any input is appreciated.

Power Steering?

bodyman369,these boxes are extremely hard to bleed the air out of. With a new install or if the system has been leaked off and empty I will fill the resivoir and leave the top off the resivoir and idle the truck until the engine is warm. Then I slowly turn the wheel, with the tires on the ground,as far as it will turn either way one time then check the fluid level and repeat until the box turns freely from stop to stop.Sometimes as with the last steering conversion I did I could not get all the air out of the system. The box continued to squeal and would not turn smoothly so I let the system sit until the next day.I checked the fluid level and started the truck, then turned the box stop to stop a few times,I could hear the rest of the air coming out thru the oil and refilled the power steering fluid. Now the steering worked perfect.Be sure to continually check the fluid level while bleeding the air out as it is easy to let it get low and suck more air into the system. If all that does not cure your problem then I might suspect the box itself as the problem.

Hi, I Just Got Started On A 78 4x4. Got It From Ca. In May. Did A Backyard Paint Job On It And Started To Work On Other Things . It Was Sitting In The Drive All Summer, but When I Finally Went To Drive It The Powersteering Was Gone. Put New Pump On It But That Didnt Do It. Turns Out It Sat Long Enough That One Balljoint Froz. I Replace It And Was On The Road Again. Just Knock The Streering Arm Off And Try Turning The Wheels While It Is In The Air,buy Hand. Hope This Works For You.

PS Box rebuild

bodyman369,I use a shop in Pheonix AZ. that rebuilds all my boxes for me,it costs quite a bit more because of the shipping but I feel he does me the best job. There is also nothing wrong with going to a reputable parts house to get a rebuild, just make sure they have a gurantee so if there is a problem they will honor the warranty. Some of FTE sponsors handle these boxes also.Hope This helps.
