I'm looking at the Crane 941 for my rebuild which has a lift of 563 and 533. I'm going with adjustable rockers for now. What other pieces should I use? I'm a bit confused having read many different posts and seeing support stands, shafts, studs, spacers, split stands... What do I need for this?
Well you need to match valve springs to the cam. Then look at the spring pressures vs the load on the shaft. I'd suggest a set of HD rocker shafts and if your spring pressures are greater than 400 lbs look into some better stands also. Most of the stock FE cams were around 500 plus or minus lift and the rockers were designed to work within these specs. Add more lift and spring pressure and you start breaking shafts etc... a good shaft and stand combo will serve you well for years if well thought out. So let us know the spring pressures for that cam. G.
People have run the 941 on stock valve train. If you have a weak spot it might find it for you. get the appropriate springs, and look at some end stands and upgrade shafts if you don't want to splurge for the complete Erson setup (about $650).
Is the CompCam roller set any good? It looks like about $300 without the shafts.
I'm not familiar with it. Is that just the roller rockers? I know the Ersons seem a little pricey. But they are complete, rockers, shafts and stands. And they will take a lot of lift and spring pressure.
Never mind them. I just talked to Comp and the whole set up is $990. And we thought Erson was salty. The ones I saw on Summit's site were just for the rockers, it wasn't real clear.
You can get some Harland Sharp (bronze bushing rides on the shaft/ roller tip on valve) that are aluminum (not sure if they are billet) from Summitt. They are like $300 something dollars. I had a set but sent them back because I was running out of money. I would recommend getting some solid spacers instead of the spacer springs to go between them, I say this because I think that the stock spacer springs would start to chew away at the edges of the bronze bushing but I could be wrong there.
I ran the Crane 941 cam with otherwise stock 390 components for 70K miles, and the only problem I had was that the OEM springs tended to break at somewhat inopportune times. After I finally replaced them with new stock springs, no more problems. I'm presently using the same cam with matching Crane springs but with DSC's adjustable rocker and solid spacer assemblies on my 410, and no problems there either after about 15K miles, other than an oiling problem that "ate" one assembly when the one stud pulled enough to block the oil passage. @*%#%*&#

I'm guessing you had studs to mount the shafts and stands instead of the the factory bolts and the one that lets oil pass into the shaft pulled some threads.?. Are you using the stock (non-heavy duty/ non-hardened) shafts? Are you using end stands?
I'm using Edel heads on the 410, and since Edel recommends using studs rather than bolts, that's what I did. However, I've been having fits with pulling the studs out anyway, in spite of following all the instructions, using Snap-On torque wrenches, being **** about not over-torquing, etc. So far I've had at least 5 of them strip on me, mostly able to repair them on the engine, but a real PITA because I've had to pull a head two different times. I finally had my machinist make a "house call" and he said to forget using a torque wrench, just snug them down with a box-end. That seems to be working now.
Anyway, the DSC rocker assemblies that I'm using are stock shafts as far as I know, with no end supports.

Ouch (feel for ya there man)! Allright. What do you normally wind that engine up to in RPM's? How often? That should give me a little better idea as to the decisions on different shafts and end stands.

Annihilator, my turn to chime in, i'm running 427 LR heads with factory spec springs with aluminum adjustable roller tip rockers that did come with two brass bushings 7/16" wide per rocker. Running a 428 CJ cam ( i know 40 year old tech) on the 410 with crane lifters and i turn up to 5,500. I have split iron rocker stands with standard shafts. I think Dove makes aluminum roller tip rockers that have no bushings. The bushings on my rockers were worn egg shaped by + .014", low oil pressure at idle and flooding the top end with HV pump. I machined oillite bushings full width and Dremeled oil grooves, that was over 300,000 miles ago, still tight. Carl....o&o>........
I never exceed 5500 RPM, and run up to that only occasionally in order to "clean out the carbon" and hopefully keep a cylinder ridge from developing too far down. So I may not be the best example for this issue. Steve
