Blow-By

Hey there again, I just thought of something that I've seen and heard about diesels, blow by. What is it , what does it do to your engine, and how can you tell if a `95 -`97 psd, or any diesel for that matter, has it? ( I'm hopin' to save up for a 95 - 97 psd for high school , i'm just 14 for now so i'm tryin' to study up as much as I can on diesels)

-Thanks alot

Blow by is the gasses that get past the piston rings into the crankcase during the compression and power stroke (no pun intented ) Those gasses are vented to the intake tube. If you have an engine in good shape you'll have some, if the engine is tired or has been overheated badly and the rings are relaxed or siezed you'll have a lot more. If the engine is toast the blowby will be excessive enough to start bringing engine oil out the tube with it due to the excess pressure and resulting air velocity in the breather tube. You'll always get a very small amount due to oil misting. That's nothing to worry about.
