I am currently installing the TCI mustang II kit in a 56 F100. I need to know the proper set up for the frame before welding. The rake angle or ride height? Should i take any measurments before removing the old straight axle? And lastley where does the centerline need to be moved in order to be in the middle of the wheel well? I have seen all types of measurements for the centerline--not sure what to go with---thanks
Hi F100man,
I just welded in a TCI MII crossmember into my '53. I set my ride height rake to 3 degrees. I have my frame level and square and i just used a dial protractor to tip the crossmember back 3 degrees. I moved my axle centerline forward 1-1/4" to center it in the wheel well. The TCI install directions show the "stock" location and all you have to do is move it forward accordingly. I took all my measurements by placing a 5/8" dowel into the front spring perch bearing hole. It worked out pretty good for me.
Your doing a great job on your truck pics were helpful to look at also I am new to the forum and I thank you for your reply. When you welded the boxing plates in did you square them to the top off the frame rail ? They don't seem to fit as good as they should, but i'm figuring you have to tweek them a little? again thanks for the reply----Darren
Thanks F100man,
This is my first build and I've learned a lot of stuff the hard way. When I positioned the boxing plates I just got them as close as I could and figured I'd clean them up with a grinding wheel when I was done. One MAJOR point that would have been helpful is that TCI told me (after the fact) that your supposed to shim the boxing plates 1/16" away from the frame rails. This helps with weld penetration and gets the boxing plates closer to the crossmember. I had about a 3/16" gap that I had to fill with weld and I would have been closer if I had used the shim.
Feel free to send me a private message if you want more detailed info.
Thanks for the info on the 3/16' spacing. That is very good info--I can not tell you how good it is to talk to someone who has been through this install. I would like to e-mail you with pics of my project 56 but i have to post 15 posts before it will allow me to use the email feature. I have owned my truck since i was 17yrs. old I started the rebuild 15 yrs ago and then life took over but I am back at it and I'm not giving up till its done this time. Thanks for the info and when it will let me I will email you some pics----Darren
