Cruise Control

2000 X, 4X4 limited, 6.8 V10.
My cruise control started to act up last night. When I try to set my cruise control I press the on button and then when I try the "SET ACCELL" button the cruise light on the dash quickly blinks on and off and the cruise does not turn on. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this?

how many miles are on your x? when this happened on my mustang the problem was my catyic converter if you can down load the computer codes it will steer you in the right direction

I have 101k miles on my X but I don't understand how the catalytic converter can cause the cruise control not to turn on.

well as best as i can remember what happens is the o2 sensor is not hot enough so the computer enriches the fuel to air mix. it goes so high the computer shuts the cruse control off. this continued untill the car would run for awhile then just shutdown ( i was on a trip)
