Transmission problem (i think)

getting on the interstate my truck drove fine, getting off the interstate i couldnt downshift! what the ####!? me and my father replaced the clutch (which was perfect) the slave cyl (which was ok) and the throw out bearing. put in the tranny and it still wont shift right. almost like something is dragging on the engine side. the pilot bearing was what we suspected, but agian, when we pulled the trans aand clutch, we found it was perfect. i had to shift float style to get anywhere, and the clutch acts normal as far as grab and release is concerned. we did bleed the slave cyl line. how much should we bleed? after the clutch was in, it did act better but not cured, it seemed to slowly resort back to its evil ways. i dont want to put in a new tranny. i dont have the money. i have a 99 xlt off road 4.0L HELP!

Transmission problem (i think)

Synchronizer? Does it do it in between all gears or only in certain transitions?

Thanks for using FTE!

it first did it through all gears, now that the clutch and slave cyl is replaced it only does it 1st threw 5th instead of reverse too. were going to change the fluid to see if fluid is dirty and gumming the sincros. the tranny only has 56K on it though and no leaks. i dont know.

Ok lets try this. Go down the highway in fourth say and record your RPM at a certain speed (say 3000 at 100 KM/H) and then shift into fifth maintaining that 100 Km/h speed. Then try downshifting into fourth if this doesnt work rev the engine up to 3000 RPM where it was in fourth at that speed. Remember if you slow down to 98 say when trying to shift the gears then it will go into gear 100 rpm lower like 2900 instead of 3000. Try it and if it goes into gear Id say you had a trans problem. Did you line up your shifter properly and did you change your fluid, How did it work before you replaced the clutch??

I found most of the problems to be with the linkage at the slave cylinder. The small bushing will wear and the cylinder won't stroke far enough.
Another area is the bushings on the clutch shaft under the dash.
Good luck
