Gauge Correction
Hey All,
Something I noticed when I traded my '75 F-100 for my '79 F-250 was that the gauges were all off....well, I noticed right away that it appeared to be running really hot but actual temp readings we normal. I also noted that I drove from Olympia Washington to North Bend Washington and the fuel gauge went from F to E ( and it's only about a 40 minute trip...alarming if you you have a 300 mile drive and only $30.00 in your pocket ) but I drove on E all the way to Moses Lake ( another 2 1/2 hours ) Before checking the actual engine temps, I thought the temp gauge was fairly accurate and I had a stuck thermostat or something, and that the sending units were just failing in the tanks. After checking the engine temps and finding them normal, as well as the oil pressure ( which also read high ) it occurred to me that somebody had previously changed dash pods and that's why all the gauges except the speedometer and amp were out of whack. Is there an adjustment I can make to the gauges to bring them closer to accurate ? On a side note, I had a rebuilt alternator for my '75 that I never installed ( I-300 ) can I use it in my '79 F-250 ( V8-400 ) ?

Make sure all of your flex circuit connections are clean. A bad ground for the voltage regulator can cause this problem. You may need to replace the voltage regulator but I have seen very few actual failures of that part. Remember to use silicone dielectric compound on all of your connections and under the regulator. There are many threads here on dash gauge problems and solutions if you can get search to work. Right now server loading problems are shutting down the search function. It should be corrected soon.
